New York City, which features Times Square and its famous lights, Broadway, the Statue of Liberty and excellent shopping, is the top destination for international visitors to the United States. International visitors are increasingly combining a visit to the city with side trips to other parts of the state. More and more international tour operators are also promoting tours throughout our eleven vacation regions. Here are some examples of exciting regional GetAways!
Long Island is known for The Hamptons and its opulent homes, as well as seaside resort towns and villages. This region also offers a diverse selection of museums, excellent outlet shopping and great salt water fishing - and yes, spectacular white sand beaches.
The Hudson Valley and Catskill Regions, north of Manhattan, are known for their art galleries, nature preserves, restaurants, exquisite historic mansions, a great variety of wineries, and the best fly fishing in the eastern U.S. Guided tours are available year-round. Whether you’re in a boat, on a horse or hiking, you will enjoy the beauty and splendor of this naturally enchanting area.
Further north of the Hudson Valley is our Capital-Saratoga Region, recognized for its history, horse racing, mineral baths, spas and theaters. You can also enjoy the state’s only amphibious boat ride while learning more about the City of Albany and the Hudson River.
Continuing north from Saratoga Springs is our Adirondack Park; 600,000 acres that offer a multitude of outdoor vacation opportunities - camping, hiking, horseback riding and all popular winter sports. Lake Placid was the site of two Winter Olympic Games. West of the Adirondacks, you will discover our beautiful 1000 Islands Region, which provides visitors with an opportunity to learn about New York State’s historical past, as well as local attractions and events, including an annual Renaissance Festival. Try boating, fishing and swimming, or take a boat tour and stop at Boldt Castle – a 120 room Rhineland-style castle built at the turn of the 20th century. The sparkling water and dazzling summer sun will make this gem of GetAway unforgettable!
South of the 1000 Islands, you’ll find the Finger Lakes, which is similar to the lake district of England. There are quaint villages next to deep lakes, renowned museums highlighting everything from glass to the earth and science, and numerous waterfalls. You will also find scenic Letchworth State Park (the Grand Canyon of the East) and more wineries and wine trails than any other part of the eastern U.S. Enjoy fine dining with an exceptional choice of red and white wines throughout the region.
Further west is the Greater Niagara Region and its main attraction, majestic Niagara Falls. Bring a waterproof camera and enjoy boat rides and tours near this world-famous attraction. You will also enjoy exciting activities; from nightlife to theater, shopping, and strolling through Victorian villages, to museums and amusement parks.
New York State also offers a great variety of festivals; celebrating everything from lilacs to garlic and seasonal activities.
